Round the Island Race Experience

Round the Island Race

The annual Round the Island Race, organised by the Island Sailing Club, is a one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight, an island situated off the south coast of England. The race regularly attracts over 1,700 boats and around 16,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs.

Competitors come from all over the UK, other parts of Europe and as far away as the USA to follow the 50 nautical mile course round the Isle of Wight. Starting on the famous Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, the fleet races westabout, to The Needles, round St Catherine's Point and Bembridge Ledge buoy, and back into the Solent to the finish line at Cowes.

CatZero has participated in this event since 2013, each year proving to be a very successful weekend. For a full report about the event from the CatZero perspection, click here.

The CatZero Round the Island 2018 Experience

Participants will join CatZero for the 2018 race on Thursday 5th July at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, before taking a training sail on Friday 6th July that ends in the beautiful port of Cowes. The race commences on Saturday 7th July 2018 in Cowes, and proceeds in a westerly direction past famous landmarks such as The Needles and St Catherines Point, before rounding No Man's Land Fort and Osbourne Bay before finally finishing in back Cowes.

Taking place over 50 nautical miles, the race is both a spectacular event and a serious challenge for any sailor, not only to brave the conditions of the English Channel, but to raise the minimum donation of £635 that CatZero will use to reinvest in its youth development programmes.

CatZero's race package for the Round the Island 2017 includes all meals on board, a Round the Island crew t-shirt, use of wet weather gear and all safety equipment.

There is also opportunity to volunteer to deliver the boat down to the south coast and / or return it back to Hull after the event and increase your sailing experience and miles.
