When M joined CatZero’s Employability Programme in October 2025, she was searching for direction. Like many young people trying to enter the workplace for the first time, she was finding it difficult to secure employment and was unsure what the future might look like.
Life Before CatZero
Before joining the programme, M was not in education, employment or training. She described her confidence at the time as fairly low and was struggling to find work. M felt quite isolated prior to beginning with CatZero due to her financial situation after a period of unemployment, her friends were working and socialising but M did not have the financial means to do so. This compounded her lack of confidence and social skills. The uncertainty of not having a clear path forward made it difficult to build momentum or gain experience.
CatZero’s programme offered the opportunity to develop new skills, build confidence and gain real world experience alongside others in a supportive environment.
The CatZero Experience
Throughout the programme, M took part in a range of activities designed to challenge participants and build important employability skills. Some of the moments that stood out most for her included sailing onboard our 72-foot Challenge Yacht, activities at Welton Waters, bowling and the chance to meet new people. M approached each activity and challenge with a determination that shone to staff and participants alike, her caring nature meant M was able to share her knowledge and skills with other participants during sessions.
These experiences helped M develop key workplace skills including teamwork and communication, while also giving her the confidence to step outside her comfort zone.
Just as important was the sense of connection created through the programme. M formed strong friendships with other participants, something that continued beyond the programme itself.
A step into employment
One of the most important opportunities came through work experience arranged by CatZero at Sewell Group. This placement allowed M to gain practical experience in a professional environment and demonstrate her potential.
Her hard work and commitment during the placement led to a job offer. M is now employed as a Bid Coordinator Apprentice at Sewell Group while studying towards a Level 3 qualification in Bid and Proposal Coordination.
Across the UK, almost one million young people aged 16 to 24 are not currently in education, employment or training. For many, the biggest challenge is gaining that first opportunity. These types of partnerships play a vital role in changing this. By offering work experience and entry routes into employment, companies can help young people unlock their potential while building a stronger future workforce.
Building a Secure Future
Being in employment has made a significant difference to M’s life. It has given her structure, purpose and the opportunity to develop new skills and knowledge every day.
Having a stable income has also allowed her to begin paying off bills and debts, helping her move towards financial security.
M now rates her confidence a lot higher and says she feels far clearer about her future.
Looking ahead, her goals are focused and positive. She plans to complete her apprenticeship, continue working with Sewell Group and build a stable financial future.
“Seeing M move from uncertainty into a professional role is exactly why we do what we do. She worked incredibly hard throughout the programme and made the most of every opportunity. We are really proud of what she has achieved and excited to see where her career takes her. Partnerships like the one with Sewell Group are vital in helping participants gain real world experience that can lead directly into employment.” Sarah, Programme and Implementation Manager.
Looking Forward
Reflecting on her journey, M says the biggest change has been gaining employment and becoming more independent. Having somewhere to go each day, learning new skills and building friendships has given her a renewed sense of direction.
Today she feels secure in her long term full time employment and is focused on continuing to grow in her role.
M’s story shows how the right support, practical experience and encouragement can help young people move from uncertainty to opportunity, building confidence and creating a pathway towards a stable future.
