FOR single mum Amy Smith having two children just a year apart in age brings with it fun, games, laughs – with some challenges along the way too.
But with the help of CatZero and CPO’s Full Families Programme in Grimsby, the future for Amy and her children is now looking brighter than ever.
Amy, her son Omar, nine, and Lily, eight, have been supported by Full Families for the last seven months. Amy had originally attended a CatZero ‘Lone Parent’ programme, after a referral from Grimsby’s Jobcentre Plus and progressed onto Full Families as a result.
Whilst always managing as a single mum, she has noticed a real difference in her life and that of her children since receiving the extra help and support.
“There is no doubt, it’s hard work being a single mum on your own and I’ve been through quite a lot, so the extra support has been great,” said Amy.
On the Lone Parent programme, Amy gained a number of qualifications, and met new friends who remain part of her life. Full Families and CatZero’s Delivery Officer Sarah Coulson then provided further support, which has continued throughout the COVID-19 lockdown period, with regular phone and text contact. Best of all, said Amy, has been the weekly activities, fun packs and challenges that Sarah and the team have posted out.
“Every week we have been getting things through the post, along with calls to see if we need anything else. It has been really good. We’ve had seeds to grow, colouring, crosswords, word searches and games. We enjoyed the food challenges, when we had to pick a few items out of the cupboards to make a meal with,” said Amy.
Speaking about the benefits of Full Families in general, Amy added: “Having the team there makes it easier, I know that if I was struggling with anything they would be there for me and that makes a big difference.
For Delivery Officer Sarah Coulson, speaking to the families over the telephone has not been the same as meeting them all in person, but it has enabled her and the team to continue offering help and support.
“Of course, I can’t wait to get back to seeing all the families again. But at least, this way, we are able to offer activities and support at what has been a challenging time for us all.”
