When Kieran first attended a CatZero Presentation Day, simply walking through the door was a huge achievement.
Like many of the young people who join our programmes, Kieran was facing challenges that had left him feeling isolated and lacking confidence. He rarely left the house and spent much of his time online, often playing Euro Truck Simulator 2, reflecting his long-standing interest in HGVs and transport. Meeting new people and stepping into unfamiliar environments felt daunting, but Kieran made the decision to give CatZero a chance.
That decision would prove life-changing.
Taking the First Step
From the very beginning, Kieran approached the programme with determination. During the introductory sessions, he quickly discovered that he could work successfully alongside people he had never met before. Through team challenges and group activities, he began building confidence and developing new skills.
Having secured a place on the programme, Kieran embraced every opportunity available to him.
Within the first few weeks, he was already pushing himself beyond his comfort zone. At Rock Up, he conquered the infamous “Stairway to Heaven” climb, while at Welton Waters he took the leap from a jetty into the water, something he would never have imagined doing just a short time earlier.
As his confidence grew, so did his personality. His dry sense of humour quickly made him popular with the rest of the group, while his inquisitive nature meant he was always eager to learn and engage with trainers throughout his qualifications.
Finding Confidence
One moment that stood out to the CatZero team came when Kieran arrived one day looking noticeably different. He had a fresh haircut and clean shave in preparation for a mock interview. Learning that unfamiliar professionals would be conducting the interviews initially unsettled him. Rather than avoiding it, Kieran prepared thoroughly, buying a suit and tie and arriving, as he described it, “looking like a CEO.”
When staff commented on the change, Kieran explained that being part of CatZero had given him a renewed sense of pride in himself. As his confidence grew, so did the way he viewed himself and his future.
Setting Sail
Perhaps the most significant part of Kieran’s journey came during CatZero’s ten-day sailing voyage.
For the first time, he was away from home for an extended period and living as part of a crew aboard the CatZero yacht.
The voyage introduced new responsibilities and routines. Participants completed four-hour watches, worked as a team and learned the practical skills required to operate a 72ft Challenger yacht. Kieran embraced every aspect of the experience.
He showed curiosity, asking thoughtful questions about sailing, navigation and the yacht’s engine systems. He quickly became a valued member of the crew and approached every challenge with enthusiasm.
When the voyage came to an end, the experience had clearly left a lasting impression. Kieran thanked the staff and fellow participants for the opportunity and reflected on everything he had achieved during his time on board.
Giving Back
By the end of the programme, the transformation in Kieran was remarkable. At the Celebration Event, he stood in front of family members, guests and fellow participants and delivered a speech about his journey, without notes and with complete confidence. It was a moment that perfectly captured how far he had come.
His contribution was so impactful that CatZero invited him back to support future recruitment events. Wearing his CatZero orange backpack with pride, Kieran has helped encourage other young people to take the same first step that he once found so difficult.
Looking Forward
Kieran’s story is a powerful reminder that confidence is not something people either have or don’t have. It can be built through encouragement, opportunity, challenge and support.
By saying “yes” to new experiences, Kieran discovered strengths he never knew he possessed. More importantly, he gained the confidence to believe in himself and his future.
We are incredibly proud of everything Kieran has achieved and grateful that he continues to inspire others beginning their own CatZero journey.
His story demonstrates exactly why CatZero exists: to help people discover their potential, challenge their limits and realise that they are capable of far more than they ever imagined.
Well done, Kieran.
